Stern’s Gym

Leo Stern, a legend in the Iron Game, opened his gym in 1946.

After quickly outgrowing the space, he moved it in 1947 to the second floor of a building in San Diego.

It has been there for 77 years running and it was one of the oldest gyms in America.

Stern was a champion bodybuilder but more importantly a legendary coach and promoter of the sport.

Stern and his gym produced many champions including several Mr Universe winners like Clancy Ross, Bill Pearl, Eddie Sylvestre and many others.

In the late 80s Leo sold the gym to Sherman Brown.

Sherman and his son Loynie continued the champion legacy into the modern bodybuilding times with Olympia champions and competitors calling Stern’s their home.

The physical culture community is indebted to the Brown family for continuing the legacy for 35 years.

Unfortunately, nothing is forever.

Stern’s as we know it has closed and there will be a new evolution for the next generation. Loynie and the team are working on their new chapter.

I’m extremely thankful that I was able to visit and add a few more things to my collection from Sterns.
